Eyeliner Tattoo
Eyeliner tattoo – a form of permanent cosmetic tattooing that involves getting pigment injected into the skin along the lash line to give you a semi-permanent lining effect. Artists use pen machine to tattoo eyeliner – a design that’ll last several years before it starts to slowly fade away. In the last year, we’ve seen many women in Melbourne considering tattoo eyeliner to boost their confidence and feel truly beautiful.
It isn’t hard to see why eyeliner tattooing is a great way to enhance your eye area without worrying about smudges or runouts. And not only that – it can really make your eyes look bigger and more wide-awake.
If you are thinking of getting a tattoo, you should definitely consider coming to us at Face Figurati. We believe we offer the best eyeliner tattoo services in the city, and our team of artists are super skilled and experienced – we can help you get the look you want, whether that’s a subtle tweak or a more dramatic change.

- My eyeliner tattoo was done by Olha and it looks amazing. It is subtle, clean and makes my eyes look more defined every day without needing makeup. I completed the 2-day lip tattoo course with Olha and I’m absolutely stoked with how much I learnt. Olha explained everything so clearly and made the whole process feel easy to follow, even with all the little details that go into lip tattooing. She even explained lip neutralisation in a really simple and practical way, which was super helpful and gave me a much better understanding of how to work with different lip tones. The course is spot on for beginners, but also super valuable for professionals who want to sharpen their technique and get more confidence. I already got to work on my first model and I’m so happy with the result. What really blew me away is that Olha doesn’t just leave you once the course is done, she keeps supporting you, answers questions, and gives helpful advice after training too. - If you’re looking for the best then look no further than Olha at Cosmetic Tattoo Melbourne! I got my eyeliner tattooed by Olha and if you want the same then I highly recommend that you see her too! As anyone would be, I was initially a little nervous but as soon as I met Olha I really felt that I was in good hands. She explained the process to me in great detail and gave me plenty of time to ask questions. Olha was very up front about what to expect, healing, fading and the need for a touch up in future. Once I’d agreed to go ahead, she looked at my eyes and based on what I wanted as well as the shape of my eyes, she drew and adjusted a template until I was really happy with it. As for the tattoo process, it wasn’t the most comfortable but definitely not as bad as you’d expect. Olha constantly checked and compared what she’d done on my eyes to make sure they were looking right and she talked me through every step as we went. She also kept everything super clean for the duration. It took a while to complete but I really had the sense that she was working hard to make sure her work was as absolutely perfect as it could be. The healing process has also been very easy. While everyone is different, I had minimal, barely noticeable swelling after and what little swelling I did have went away very quickly. Olha really appeared to care about her work, is very patient and gentle and made sure that I was happy with the result. I couldn’t be more impressed with how easy and pleasant she made the whole experience and with how beautiful my eyeliner tattoo turned out. What is eyeliner tattoo?
An eye liner tattoo is one of those semi-permanent cosmetic tattoos in which a special pigment is implanted along the lash line to create a pretty, long-lasting eye definition.
Unlike a traditional body tattoo, the way we do cosmetic eyeliner tattooing is all about using the right pigment, machine settings, and implantation depth that’s just right for delicate skin. And our goal is always a softer, more elegant enhancement rather than going for a big, bold look.
Some clients who come to see me in my Melbourne studio are after a super subtle lash enhancement – just something that makes them look like they’ve got fuller lashes. Others want a more visible permanent eyeliner or a softly shaded liner – the choice is really down to you and what you’re after.
What I always say to my clients is that a properly done eyeliner tattoo should complement your features naturally – it shouldn’t overpower the look of your face.
Benefits
Most people who come to me about natural eyeliner tattoos aren’t trying to look ridiculously made up. They’re usually just tired of their eyeliner smudging, or struggling to get their makeup to look right – or, you know, just plain old tired of putting their eyeliner on every morning and messing it up.
I get to work with a lot of busy clients who can’t be bothered with all that – and they want to simplify their routines without giving up on eye definition. Some of them are sensitive to traditional makeup or struggle with shaky hands or vision changes that make it a real pain to get their eyeliner on.
When done properly and healed up right, a semi permanent eyeliner can do all that:
- Give you a softer facial definition
- Make your lashes look fuller
- Cut down on the smudging
- Make the gym or swimming a lot easier
- Lower your beauty-maintenance routine
- Give you a more subtle look without having to wear loads of makeup
One of the big long-term benefits is that when you get a well-done eyeliner tattoo, it can still look elegant years later – provided it was done carefully and customised to your face.
Who Is a good candidate?
An eyeliner tattoo can suit a surprisingly wide range of people when the treatment is planned carefully.
Many of my Melbourne clients searching for cosmetic eyeliner tattoos near me are professionals, busy mums, gym-goers, mature clients, or people who simply want a lower-maintenance beauty look. Some wear eyeliner daily and want to save time. Others barely wear makeup at all but want subtle eye definition that still feels natural.
Mature clients often benefit particularly well from softer eyeliner tattooing in Melbourne because delicate lash definition can brighten the eyes without the heaviness that harsh makeup sometimes creates on thinner skin.
I also work with many clients who have had previous tattoo eyeliner elsewhere and are now seeking correction work because the pigment has healed blue, migrated, or become too thick over time.
During consultation, I assess your skin type, eyelid anatomy, healing tendencies, lifestyle, and long-term expectations because not every eyeliner style suits every eye shape equally well.
Contraindications
Even though cosmetic tattoo eyeliner can be a great option for many people, there are definitely times when I might suggest putting off the treatment or avoiding it altogether.
There are certain medical issues, medications, active skin irritations or recent eye procedures that might interfere with the healing process & the staying power of the ink. If you’ve got super sensitive eyes, watery eyes, or conditions like autoimmune disorders, or have had some cosmetic work done around the eye area recently, we’ll want to take a closer look at whether it’s something we can do.
Some things that might make it harder for us to get cosmetic tattoo eyeliner to work right include:
- An active eye infection
- You’ve just had eye surgery
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
- You’ve got uncontrolled diabetes
- You’ve got some pretty bad skin irritation going on near the eyes
- You’re on blood-thinning medication
- You’ve had laser work done around the eye area recently
At Face Figurati, we don’t rush into anything. I sit down with you and talk all about your medical history, any previous experience you have with cosmetic tattoos, and how you heal after getting treatments. Because the truth is, we care more about getting you safe than looking good.
Techniques
The way an eyeliner tattoo heals depends on your individual skin type, the shape of your eyes, your age, and how you live your life. What you want from the procedure in the long term plays a big role in determining which technique will age most naturally.
Over the years, I’ve seen that doing a more subtle job really does age better than bang-for-buck work. In my experience, going at it conservatively rather than aggressively always gives a better result long term
Lash Enhancement
Lash enhancement tattoo is one of the softest looking techniques I do for cosmetic eyeliner, and its really popular with clients who are looking for a natural look without the heavy makeup feel.
Rather than putting liner right above the lashes, I put the pigment actually inside the lash line – its a really subtle look and gives the illusion of fuller lashes. Clients love the fact its not too obvious, but still gives the eyes a bit of definition.
When its healed, you just look a bit more awake, and your eyes seem brighter.
Winged Eyeliner
Winged eyeliner is still pretty popular, but I’m pretty picky about who I do it on. Not every eye shape is suited to a real dramatic wing – some eyes just look better with a softer placement of the liner. Older skin, hooded lids, and some of the eyelid structures out there just don’t heal as well with a big wing.
My goal is always to create something you’ll still be happy with in years to come, rather than just following the latest trend.
Classic Eyeliner
Classic permanent eyeliner is a good option if you want a bit more definition but don’t want the thickness of liquid liner. Its a great option for people who want to look like they’ve got some sort of liner on, but still look natural.
Shaded Eyeliner
Shaded or ombre eyeliner is one of those soft, diffused effects that some people love. Done right, its looks pretty beautiful, but to be honest, you need to have a delicate touch with this one – do it too aggressively and the eyelid skin can get overworked and start to look all wrong.
Bottom Eyeliner
If you want a bottom eyeliner tattoo, you really do need to do it in a conservative way – the skin on the lower eyelid is pretty delicate, and you don’t want to do anything that might cause it to migrate over time.
Personally, I usually recommend a nice, subtle liner rather than a thick, chunky bottom liner, which can start to look harsh as the years go by.
Coloured Tattooing
Black is still the most popular colour, but some of the clients Ive had heal better with softer charcoal or espresso tones – it really depends on your skin tone, eye colour and lash density.
I always pick pigments that will heal softly and naturally, rather than go for the super heavy-duty carbon black colours.
Preparation
The state of your skin and overall comfort beforehand can have a pretty big impact on how healed you end up looking, so do your best to get prepared before heading in.
Before we get started, I generally advise my clients to cut back on caffeine and booze and to steer clear of active skincare products around the eyes for a bit. It’s a good idea to avoid any lash extensions and only get some brief sunlight exposure if you have to. If you wear contacts, tossing on your glasses after the procedure might be a good idea – trust me on this one.
People browsing eyeliner tattoo before-and-after pics can be a bit taken aback by how much of a difference the right prep and aftercare routine can make.
Procedure
Don’t expect your aesthetic eyeliner tattoo appointment to be a rush job – the consultation, the planning, the talk – all that is just as important as the actual tattooing bit.
Here at Face Figurati, each of my appointments starts with a good long look at your eye shape, how your lids move, what your skin is like around the eye, the density of your lashes, how your face is generally assembled, and what kind of makeup you usually go for. You’d be surprised how some eyeliner styles that look great when your eyes are closed just disappear the moment you open them up, and others might actually make your eyes look like they’re pulling down if they aren’t done just so.
Once we get the design and colour sorted, I will slap on some numbing cream to make things a bit more bearable for you.
Most people looking for whether eyeliner tattoos hurt are pretty relieved to find out that, most of the time, it really isn’t that bad. The sensation is often more of a vibration, a bit of pressure, or an odd scratching feeling rather than a sharp, stabbing pain.
| Appointment Stage | What Happens |
|---|---|
| Consultation | Eye assessment and treatment planning |
| Mapping | Shape and symmetry design |
| Pigment Selection | Custom colour matching |
| Numbing | Topical anaesthetic application |
| Procedure | Cosmetic tattoo pigment implantation |
| Aftercare | Healing and maintenance guidance |
Most appointments take approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on complexity and whether previous cosmetic tattoo correction is required.
Healing
Healing anxiety is a totally normal reaction after getting a permanent eyeliner tattoo. People tend to overthink every stage of the process because, let’s be honest, the eye area is pretty delicate and on show.
The first few days are usually the most stressful because that fresh pigment looks way darker and way more dramatic than the final result. It’s a bit of a shock, to be honest.
The general pattern of healing looks like this:
- In the first few days, 1-3, the pigment is super dark, and there can be a bit of swelling
- Days 4-7, you might start to notice some light flaking and the area can look a bit patchy for a while
- After week 7, things start to soften up nicely
- By week 4 or 5, the final result is starting to take shape
Loads of people get worried during the peeling process because they assume something’s gone wrong, but in reality, that’s just a normal part of healing. Temporary unevenness is pretty common.
At Face Figurati, I always reassure people that cosmetic tattoos rarely come out perfectly symmetrical in the first week. One eye might look a bit worse than the other, or swell up more quickly than the other, especially with those delicate eyelids.
Aftercare
Getting aftercare right can make a big difference in how your eyeliner tattoo looks.
While it’s healing, I advise people to steer clear of swimming pools, saunas, heavy sweating, and try not to rub the area too much – or put on too much eye makeup. Melbourne’s UV can still cause problems even in the cooler months, so getting your hands on some good SPF and maybe some sunglasses isn’t a bad idea.
Of course, every person is different, so I give each client a customised aftercare plan that takes into account their skin type, lifestyle and how they like to take care of themselves – because lets face it, everyone heals at their own pace.
Shade selection
Choosing a pigment shade is way more important than most people think.
Black isn’t always the best choice – some skin tones and eye colours look better with softer, more muted shades like charcoal or espresso. It really depends on you and what you’re looking for.
Before I choose a shade, I take a good, hard look at your natural colouring, your lash density, what kind of makeup you usually wear, and how you think it will look in a few years’ time. I want to make sure your eyeliner tattoo is still looking good in years to come.
Touch-Up
Touch-ups are a completely normal part of getting a cosmetic tattoo.
Not everyone’s skin responds to pigment the same way, and some areas may be a bit softer than others after the initial session. Things like oily skin, swimming, and sun exposure can all affect retention.
Most people need a touch-up around 6 – 10 weeks after the initial procedure once they’re healed up properly. And then, depending on how much definition you want to keep, you’ll probably need to come back every 1-3 years for a maintenance appointment.
Side effects
You can expect some mild swelling, tenderness, and temporary sensitivity after getting your eyeliner tattoo – these are all pretty normal side effects.
Everybody heals differently, so while most side effects settle in just a few days, there are a few things to be aware of: puffiness, watery eyes, and the possibility that your eyeliner might look a bit uneven as it heals. I always aim to set realistic expectations with my clients – I think that’s a big part of being an ethical cosmetic tattooist: being upfront about what you can realistically expect, rather than over-promising and under-delivering.
Does eyeliner tattoo hurt?
People usually ask me, “Does the eyeliner tattoo hurt?” Most people would say it’s uncomfortable, rather than outright painful. I use anaesthetic cream throughout the treatment to help keep things as comfortable as possible, and most people end up finding it’s not as bad as they were expecting.
The sensation is a bit hard to describe, but it’s usually more like a vibration or some gentle pressure around your lashes, rather than sharp pain. And the good news is that genuine severe pain is pretty unusual as long as the procedure is done properly.
How long does eyeliner tattoo last?
Permanent eyeliner will eventually fade and soften over time – it’s not like it stays looking perfect forever. How long it takes to start to fade depends on loads of different factors: your skin type, how much sun you get, what skincare products you use, how active you are, and a bunch of other things.
As a rough guide, most eyeliner tattoos will last between 1 and 3 years, but that can vary widely from person to person. If you have oily skin or you’re really active, you might notice it fades faster than if you have drier skin.
At Face Figurati, I’m all about helping you get eyeliner that looks good for as long as possible – rather than some super thick, bright line that looks harsh after a few years.

FAQ
Do permanent eyeliners really work that well on hooded eyes?
Hey, even if you’ve got hooded eyes, you can still rock a permanent eyeliner. Lots of people think that permanent eyeliner styles won’t work on hooded eyes, but that’s not necessarily true. If you’re still unsure, booking a consultation with a cosmetic tattoo artist is a good call, so they can take a closer look and give you their two cents.
How do you work out the cost?
The cost will depend on what design you’re after (is it just a top line, or do you want a wedge too?) and whether we’re going to do any lash line enhancing as well. Once we’ve completed an assessment and mapped out the work, we’ll be able to provide you with a definitive price.
Can I still wear eye makeup after I get my eyeliner tattoo?
It’s generally best to give your eye makeup a break for 7 to 10 days after getting your eyeliner tattoo, so that it can heal in peace.
Can you fix old eyeliner tattoos if they're gone wrong?
Yes, you can – most of the time. The key to a successful correction is getting a good idea of the existing pigment, how saturated it is, whether it’s moved around under the skin and what the condition of your skin is like.
What's the big difference between lash enhancement and eyeliner tattoo?
Lash enhancement tattoo is all about creating a nice subtle line right on the lash line, while traditional eyeliner is more about creating a bold visible liner above the lashes.
